BCBSNM Employees are going back to school…..To deliver 25,000 school supplies!

Do you remember the smell of a new box of crayons? Remember the excitement you felt having all new school supplies that first week of school? Maybe you were like me and spent the days leading up to that “first day” organizing and reorganizing your new stash of pristine school necessities. Many elementary students in New Mexico don’t have those same feelings, because there isn’t money in the family budget for a lengthy list of new school supplies.

For 25 years, employees of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) have worked throughout the summer to raise funds and donate school supplies to at-risk children throughout the state. For the 2015-2016 school year , our employees donated more than 25,000 school supplies for 25 elementary schools through our own Operation Back to School (OBTS) campaign.

BCBSNM understands that the beginning of school can add financial strain for families who have limited resources. We want all students to have the essential school supplies to help them be successful in the classroom. Over the past 25 years, 45 school districts and 85 different schools have benefitted from OBTS donations.

Through BCBSNM’s Operation Back to School efforts more New Mexican students know the excitement of going to school with all the school supplies they need to have a great school year!

Sort Night is the annual event when BCBSNM employees divide school supplies for the selected schools. This year 25 schools received spiral notebooks, paper, boxes of pencils, scissors, glue, crayons, tissues, hand sanitizers, and erasers.

BCBSNM employees volunteer on their own time to fundraise, purchase supplies, and deliver the supplies to the schools each year.
