Meet our Care Van Driver – A Man on the Move!

The day starts early for one Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) employee. Thomas Butler often starts up the BCBSNM Care Van® before 6:00 a.m. and hits the road before most people have had their first cup of coffee.

As the BCBSNM Care Van Program Specialist, not to mention the man behind the wheel, Thomas will log more than 20,000 miles on New Mexico’s highways by year’s end. Through a community partnership program, BCBSNM’s Care Van travels throughout the state to schools, senior centers, health fairs and community-wide events, offering medical screenings and distributing health literature to assist and educate fellow New Mexicans. In 2015, the Care Van provided almost 1,500 immunizations and flu shots and more than 4,000 health screenings to children and adults.

Thomas has been with BCBSNM since 2017 and has been the Care Van Specialist for two years. “I like being the New Mexico Care Van Specialist because I enjoy driving and seeing the state,” said Thomas. “I am able to serve the communities and coordinate health screenings for those who may not otherwise have access to care. I also enjoy working with seniors and children, and this job enables me to do both. It is wonderful to see the smiles on people’s faces when they see the BCBSNM Care Van arrive in their community.”

The BCBSNM Care Van program launched in 2006 with the 30-foot mobile medical clinic. BCBSNM partners with strong community organizations and licensed medical providers to help address the health care needs of New Mexico’s most vulnerable populations through the Care Van program.
