13 Healthy Swaps for the Holidays

The holidays are here along with the best food of the year. Don’t we all want to enjoy the holiday food and sweets without adding unwanted weight? We don’t want to regret eating the food that leads to the most common New Year’s resolution, “I’m going to lose weight this year.” It’s much easier to face the New Year if you don’t have to face the unwanted weight, too.

  1. Swap eating fast for eating slowly. Eating slower gives your body time to catch up with how full you really feel. If you know that you’re full before you eat too much, it’s easy to avoid unwanted calories.
  2. Instead of taking a nap from being too full; take a walk around the block. We all know that feeling of being so full after Thanksgiving dinner that all you want to do is lie on the sofa and watch TV. If you can take a walk around the block first, it will help you digest your food while you burn some extra calories.
  3. Swap mayonnaise-based salad dressings like thousand Island, ranch and blue cheese olive oil and vinegar or vinaigrettes.
  4. Swap dark meat for white meat. It’s always better for you, and never eat the skin!
  5. Swap a big plate for a small plate. Psychologically, we feel full after we eat off a full plate. If you fill up a smaller plate than normal, it will force you to stop eating before you reach for seconds, and it will help you to keep your eyes from being bigger than your stomach.
  6. Swap big for smaller portions. You’ll eat fewer calories and won’t have the dare to clean your plate. If you combine this with eating on a smaller plate, you’re really ready.
  7. Eat more protein and vitamins and avid the carbs. If you skip the bread, potatoes, and rice, you’ll have more room to eat turkey and veggies. If Thanksgiving isn’t complete without bread, eat wheat instead of white bread. If potatoes are a must, eat baked sweet potatoes instead of candied yams or white potatoes.
  8. Swap the soufflés and casseroles for oven-roasted veggies. When you remove the eggs, cream and cheese that go into these dishes, you’re also leaving off the pounds.
  9. Swap store bought stuffing for a homemade healthy holiday recipe.
  10. Trade cranberry sauce for cranberry relish or cranberry adorned sides.
  11. Swap more work for less work. If you’re cooking dinner, don’t cook the ham and high-fat dishes to save yourself and your family lots of calories. When you cook simple dishes with fewer ingredients, or skip extra dishes all together, you will be healthier, while saving time and money too!
  12. Swap alcoholic and soft drinks for flat or sparkling water or even a juice spritzer.
  13. If you’re going to have dessert (and we know we are), choose the pumpkin pie over all else, and leave the crust and whipped cream behind.

You should enjoy the holidays and your favorite foods. If you can set a few limits around how much and what you eat, you can have a guilt-free holiday season without hard-to-lose weight afterwards.
