3 Reasons Why Women Should Choose Blue

Reason # 1 - Health Management Programs

pregnant woman and child holding hands Blue Care Connection (BCC) is a program that provides educational tools, health support and outreach to our members. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) members receive guidance to help them manage everything from basic health issues to chronic health conditions.

There are BCC programs available for all of our health insurance plan types, but some programs are only available with certain plans. Ask about Blue Care Connection programs when you shop or re-enroll for health insurance. They include but are not limited to:

Well onTarget®
Find the resources and support you need, plus earn great rewards for making healthy choices. You will be able to access to a convenient, members-only website that includes a health assessment, interactive tools and educational information and tips, as well as a points reward program. Well onTarget  is available to HMO and PPO members.

Fitness Program
Regular exercise is an important part of healthy living. With the Fitness Program, members and their covered dependents (age 18 and older) are eligible to participate and receive a flexible membership that allows them access to gyms nationwide. The fitness program is available to HMO and PPO members.

Special Beginnings®

PPO Members are supported from early pregnancy through six weeks after your baby is born.  Special Beginnings also provides advanced online and mobile technology resources for our members which include:

  • A healthy pregnancy calendar to help you keep track of your pregnancy
  • Details about each trimester and the physical and emotional changes in you and your baby
  • Videos that cover topics such as eating habits, exercise, stress and more
  • A list of screenings and vaccines to help you prepare for your checkups
  • Program support available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., CT

Reason # 2 - Your Choice of Doctors
No matter which BCBSNM insurance plan you select, you’ll have many providers to choose from, including your choice of an in-network OB-GYN. And with a large percentage of New Mexico doctors and hospitals participating in our networks, chances are very good that your current health care providers are included.

Before you commit to a plan check Provider Finder to see if the doctor or OB-GYN you’d like to use is a part of the health insurance plan you’d like to buy.

We have three levels of health care plans  — bronze, silver and gold. All plans have similar benefits, and all include essential health benefits and preventive services for women. Where they differ is on how the costs of the benefits are applied.

Women’s Preventive Services
Our health plans cover the following types of preventive services for women and recommended screenings with no out-of-pocket costs—as long as you visit a doctor in your health plan's provider network. Finding a doctor that provides these screenings and services should be no problem, since we have the largest network of doctors in the state.

  • An annual wellness visit
  • Osteoporosis screenings
  • Certain cancers and diabetes testing
  • Mammograms
  • Pap smears
  • Gestational diabetes screenings
  • Breastfeeding support, counseling and supplies – including manual and electric breast pumps
  • Counseling for sexually transmitted infections
  • Interpersonal and domestic violence screening and counseling
  • Immunizations such as an annual flu shot
  • Counseling and screening for HIV—the virus that can cause AIDS
  • Testing for Human Papillomavirus (HPV) — the virus that can cause cervical cancer
  • FDA-approved contraception methods and counseling

You read that right! Manual and electric breast pumps are available when you use an in-network provider. And if pregnancy isn’t for you right now, there are many different contraceptives that are covered by your health insurance plan, including birth control pills, patches and injections, and women check ups.
